Cookie Decorating

Ghosts, Ghouls and Goblins, Barony of Carillion 10/22/2011
Coordinated by The Honorable Lady Jolie Delarue
Cookie Decorating Activity: Ages 2+ with parental/guardian assistance for those under the age of 8
Materials needed: Cookie cutter sugar cookies cut out in Autumn & Halloween shapes; Royal Icing or Cookie decorating icing in pastry bags in various colors; paper plates; 4x6  index cards; pencils; baby wipes; plastic garbage bags.
Items to prep ahead of time:
  • Cookies, enough for participants to decorate 2 or 3 each.
  • Icing separated into pastry bags in various colors.
  • Make smocks out of plastic garbage bags by cutting a head hole & two arm holes for participants to wear over garb to keep from getting icing on clothing.
Activity:
  • Have each participant (or parent/guardian) take a 4x6 index card, fold it in half & write their first name & age on the card.
  • Distribute paper plates to each participant & allow participants to choose up to 3 cookies to decorate.
  • When working with varying age groups, it is suggested to allow the youngest to choose first and then go up by age.
  • If there are enough bags of icing, allow each participant to choose their own bag to work with. If there are not enough bags of icing, then pair up participants to share colors & take turns using all the colors they wish to use for decorating.
  • Once the participants have decorated all of the cookies they have chosen, set up a Youth A&S display with each participants plate & name card while the icing dries.
Clean-up: Baby wipes will remove most if not all of the color & icing from skin. Pass out baby wipes first for participants to clean any icing up that got on skin or clothing & then have them remove their smocks for disposal.
